Costa Maya was the “new” port that was put in place when Guatemala was removed from the itinerary. And, Costa Maya is indeed a “new” port – it was built to accommodate the cruise industry. There are excursions to Mayan ruins that you can take but we chose not to (one of us isn’t into visiting ruins…). I decided to at least get off the ship to stretch my legs.

After walking around the pier area, I have renamed Costa Maya as Mexico Disneyland. It was just like walking through a Disney interpretation of what Mexico is. There was an area where you could see Incan pole dancers (and the hat was passed afterwards for tips). Everything was clean and perfect. A person could shop, eat, drink, and swim (in the free pool) to their heart’s content. I hope my pictures convey the flavor of the fake town.
